Guide to Course Code / Name Changes

Posted by Saudah Mirza, Outreach Manager on August 20th, 2008

assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah,

You may have noticed that some of our course names and course codes have changed as part of an effort to make names and codes more intuitive to you. Below is a guide so that the changes are clear.

Course Name Changes:

Introduction to Islamic Spirituality - Part 1 (SPR111) is now A Taste of Tasawwuf - Part 1. We are adding a new introductory level spirituality course that will be offered this Fall.

Introduction to the Quran (QRN111) is now The Quran and Its Disciplines. In the future as part of the Seekers curriculum, we will also be offering Hadith and Its Disciplines (HDT111).

Couse Code Changes:

BLF110 (Introduction to Islamic Belief) is now BLF101. It’s not yet open for registration, but it will be soon. It’s the same introductory level belief course, but will now be using Imam Tahawi’s text.

HST011 (Full Moon Rising) is now GNL011 as the content is less history and more about understanding the character and characteristics of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

HDT102 (40 Hadith of Imam Nawawi) is now HDT101, since it’s the first course students should take in the hadith department (as either an elective in Foundations or required in Seekers).

LAH100 (Essentials of Islam Hanafi) and LAS100 (Essentials of Islam Shafi’i) are now LAH101 and LAS101 respectively.

LGC111 (Introduction to Classical Logic) is now LGC201 because it is a transitional level course.

Please let us know if you have any questions on the above changes.

Assalaam-u-alaykum wr wb

I have a question about SPR111. Will SPR111 count for credit towards the foundations degree even though the curriculum says we have to take the new Spirituality course that is going to be offered for the first time in the fall’08?

WSalaam && Allah Hafiz
Omair

wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah,

If you took SPR111, 112, or 113 in the Summer 2008 semester or prior, it will count towards the Foundations degree. Starting Fall 08 and on, you would need to take the new SPR101.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Assalam alaykum

What about SPR120? What I understood from your New Curriculum Promotion material on the website before the start of Summer Semester is that any course under spirituality will cover the requirement for spirituality part of the diploma, thats why, I opt for the short course in order to save the money. Am I wrong?

JazzakAllah
Ali

wa ‘alaykum assalam,

Yes, if you have taken any of the spirituality department courses with Shaykh Nuh Keller, Habib Ali, or Habib Umar during Summer 2008 or prior, you will be able to use it to fulfill this course requirement. I was just responding to br. Omair’s question about SPR111 (and mentioned 112 and 113 only because they’re part of the same series).

Bismillahirrahmanirraheem

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah Ta’ala Wabarakatuh

I have the below questions:

1. Is QRN101 in the Seekers’ curriculum the same as QRN121 offered in the fall? I don’t see a QRN101 in the current semester’s offerings….

2. I am interested in the Seekers’ degree - if I have taken LAH111. is it still required to take LAH101 for the degree?

3. It was mentioned that BLF101 will soon be opened for registration, do you mean for the fall 08 semester or spring 09 semester? (i.e. what is meant by ’soon’?)

Thanks

Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!

I noticed that none of the methodology classes are listed as available and Hadith Methodology is entirely missing from the list! I advertised those courses to my friends extensively and was waiting for the fall to tell them to sign up!

Are there plans to include those courses for this semester or are they being postponed/canceled?

JazakAllah khayr!

wa ‘alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah,

Ayesha:

1) No, QRN101 is a new course that hasn’t been offered yet. It’s not the same as QRN121. QRN101 will be covering the short chapters from the 30th juz of the Qur’an.

2) Please submit a ticket to the Helpdesk (support.SunniPath.com) and our Academic Adviser can help you out regarding your particular situation.

3) BLF101 will be offered this Fall. Insha’Allah registration will open in the coming couple of weeks.

Anton:
This semester, there is going to be one methodology course offered: the new LMT102, the Sources of Islamic Law. Insha’Allah it will be opened for registration in the next couple of weeks. The other methodology courses will be offered in the coming semesters.
