Dear Laurie
I converted to Islam over ten years ago and the response of the Muslims to me has been very mixed.

Firstly let me put your mind at rest, not one person has looked down on me for converting to Islam - not one ever and I have lived in lots of different places and met a whole range of people.

The most negative reaction I consistently get is from Muslims who are convinced that the only reason women convert is to catch themselves a man and they ask questions like - do you drink alchohol/eat pork/pray. When I say I am living a Muslim life then I get treated fine. I find it sad because if they really understood what an honour it is to know the truth then they would be amazed that all people don't convert rather than astonished that some do.

More religious people, those who understand the religion, have been very good to me. I have been treated like a daughter/sister/true friend by countless ladies. I managed to fill my life with people of this calibre until I married two years after I converted.

I cannot tell you that you will be treated wonderfully by every Muslim you ever meet. But hand on heart, God will give you what you need and God will take care of you when you become Muslim to worship Him (I have lost sight of this from time to time, but looking back it is true).

For me becoming Muslim was like a light shining on my life and all the dark shadowy bits disappeared and things suddenly made sense. I was given all the friends I needed and my friendships were based on something deeper than anything I knew before I became Muslim.

This is a summary of my experiences as a convert to Islam. I hope you enjoy a successful life in Islam and If I don't meet you in this life - God willing we will meet as sisters in paradise. X

Hi Laurie,

Looking at your comments I can see where you are coming from having reservations myself before becoming Muslim and I have to say they were completely unfounded. It's been an honour in my life to meet so many great people who have so much love and respect for Islam and they get really happy when they see someone convert to Islam.

Never felt happier or more at home than being amongst the Muslims.

Assalaamu alaykum,

This is Isa Truchet, a brother from England.

Firstly congratulations on becoming Muslim and May Allah continue to increase you and give you of His Immense Happiness & Peace in the way of Islam.

The story of how you came into Islam is very similar to mine as I met some tremendous Muslims both at school and then at University and I too found that the Holy Trinity just did not feel right. I found that it was true to believe, we had been created for a purpose and I found that Islam that held this Truth for me.

People kept asking me "How do you feel brother". And always without pause I would describe how abase piece of metal can become magnetized and every electron points in the same direction. Every part of my life now seemed correct and not a jumble.

So again; congratulations and keep smiling because we have the Love of Allah.

Peace,

Isa

Dear Laurie,
I hope you are well. I am a born Muslim but my husband, many of my friends and most importantly, my teachers of Islam, are converts from other religions! It is very inspiring for me to have all of these very special people in my life and I learn so much from them every day. Everyone I know respects them, both people who follow the religion they left and also the Muslim communities in which they live.
My husband’s family are not Muslim but I always notice how he is respected most by all of them. Even though they feel uncomfortable discussing religion with him, his parents and siblings admire his morals and his conviction that Islam is the true way. When one of them wants advice they always turn to him first. When they need help they turn to him. When they are sad they turn to him. His mum is still a non-practising Christian but when she is down she asks him to say a prayer for her! They see that it takes great strength and courage to practise his religion and therefore they respect him. I have never seen people look down upon my husband for leaving his religion. When Muslims see his interactions in his daily affairs, they admire his trustworthy nature and benefit from the happiness that radiates from his soul. I can say this is true for most of my friends who are converts and especially my teachers, many of whom you will find at SunniPath :o) I pray you find this too.
There is indeed uncertainty all around us, but God has given us control over our own decisions and given us SunniPath to answer all of your queries ;o) Whenever I’m uncertain about something, I know that the truth is out there....it can nearly always be found on SunniPath!
Best wishes,
Aisha

Dear Laurie
I converted nearly 30 years ago and I'm ever so grateful that Allah Most High guided me to Islam. Everywhere I went I found Muslims welcoming me – many would cry when they heard my conversion story and most would just cry at witnessing Allah’s mercy through guiding those He wills. At times the different things the Muslims said to me confused me but you have Sunnipath to get knowledge from, so this will protect you from that slippery path. Please don’t be afraid – ask Allah for strength to do what’s most pleasing to Him and I pray that He gives you the best of this world and the next.

Dear Laurie,

May God bless you and make your next step in your journey to Him easy and beautiful. Becoming Muslim joins you to the family of believers who come from every walk of life, from every place on earth and every stage of life. In the family of Islam you will find those who came from Catholism, from Hinduism, from Judaism, who were atheist or just unsure. You will find a community of people who have their faults but are a people who truly feel blessed to be guided to Islam and are filled with happiness when the family grows. So you are welcome :)
If we can be of assistance in any way, please don't hesitate to be in touch.
May God bless you and your family with every good always,

Sincerely,
Noura Shamma

Hi Laurie! We would love to have you as part of the Muslim community. I was born Muslim, but I have many dear friends who converted to Islam from another faith. Hopefully there are Muslims in your local area. If not, there's definitely a lot of us online!
