Does anyone know what "non-profit" organisation really implies ? How can a non-profit organisation have a collective budget of 1 billion dollars?

I an ignorant in economics-finance related terms, but quite keen on finding out.

Where I live housing is so expensive that if I were to work for the rest of my life,I might only then be able to buy a house.May be rented accomodation is a better option.
