Islam & the Language of the Arabs

Posted by Saudah Mirza, Outreach Manager on September 17th, 2007

assalamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah,

This Sunday, SunniPath will be hosting its first CourseLens for the Fall 2007 semester, Islam & the Language of the Arabs with Shaykh Hamza Karamali at 12pm GMT.

“The All-Merciful taught the Qur’an, created man, and taught him speech” (55:1-4). Language is closely linked to religion, as it is the means by which knowledge is conveyed. For Muslims, Arabic holds a high place because it is the language of the Qur’an and Hadith literature, and also the language in which scholars of different ethnic backgrounds communicated with each other.

In Islam & the Language of the Arabs, Shaykh Hamza will explore the relationship between language and the mind, and how effective and eloquent language stems from clear and insightful thought. Due to a general decline in the language capability of people in the present day, whether English, Arabic, or otherwise, our ability to appreciate the linguistic miracle of the Quran has been marred. How do we get over this difficulty in learning language to learn Arabic properly and thus appreciate the Qur’an more fully? Islam & the Language of the Arabs explores themes from both the upcoming Peak of Eloquence short course and SunniPath’s entire Arabic program.

Salaam,

I think this is good, but if I may make a suggestion being that we are in Ramadan and people calculate their zakat around this time - I think a good course lens would be similar to the live Answers course you had before, but on the subject of Zakat.

I learned that you cannot pay zakat to mosques, schools, dawah institutions that do not fit in the 8 categories, but I am seeing all the fundraising in our local town collecting zakat funds for many different purposes - saying they fit in the category “fi sabil Allah.”

I suggest annually to have a Q&A course lens on this topic around Ramadan to help people learn how to pay their zakat.

Islamonline has such a live dialogue annually on this topic.

wasalaam,
Fedwa

wa ‘alaykum assalam,

I think that’s a great idea to have a Zakat workshop. I’m not sure if we can plan it in at this date, but insha’Allah perhaps we can try to have this next year.

wasalaam,
saudah

salaam,

when will the recording be up?

wasalaam,
Fedwa

wa ‘alaykum assalam,

Insha’Allah within the next day.

wasalaam.
