Inheritors of Light Lecture Series: Nana Asma’u

Posted by Saudah Mirza, Outreach Manager on August 14th, 2007

“Barakah descends when the righteous are mentioned.” —A Famous Saying

As part of SunniPath’s Inheritors of Light Lecture Series, there will be a special live event for SunniPath students. Ustadha Noura Shamma will be giving a talk on the life of Nana Asma’u, the daughter of Shaykh Usman dan Fodio. From the Prophetic era until our present day, there have been countless female Muslim scholars and activists. However, many have remained an undiscovered treasure outside their native lands or to us who speak only English. By the grace of Allah, Ustadha Noura will elucidate the life of one of the greatest Muslim women scholars of the nineteenth century. The event will take place this Saturday, August 25th at 5pm EST / 9pm GMT.

The idea behind this event and others like it is to use the life of a great scholar to inspire us in our own quest for Sacred Knowledge.

Please scroll down for directions on how to access the event.

Salaam,

“From the Prophetic era until our present day, there have been countless female Muslim scholars and activists.”

I am glad we are discussing female scholars and teachers. The more women in the Muslim community know of their stories, the more they may follow their path instead of others.

wasalaam,
Fedwa

I’m so excited for this!
:)

Assalaamualikum

I’m delighted to have an oppurtunity to learn about female scholars, ignorant as I am, and being new to this vast world of endless Islamic knowledge, I didn’t even know we had any.
This is an excellent way of showing us that we as women can inshallah be scholars and encourage our daughters to follow in their footsteps.

Wasalaam

As salaamu alaykum,

I am very happy to see that SunniPath is raising awareness of a great scholar, caller to Allah ta’ala, community organizer, and friend of Allah ta’ala.

Her works, along with those of her father, Imam Uthman ibn Fodio, and other relatives number in the hundreds covering every Islamic science in detail, and resonating with the spirit of moderation, Islamic rejuvenation, and lack of fanaticism over minhaj, madhhab, and tariqa that plagues so many Muslim individuals and organizations today.

I highly encourage all who wish to know more about Nana Asma’u to read One Woman’s Jihad: Nana Asma’u, Scholar and Scribe by Jean Boyd and Beverly Mack.

What is most inspiring about her is that her spiritual and intellectual legacy is still very much alive in Nigeria and Niger today and is being transmitted to all women who seek it.

May Allah ta’ala bless the efforts of SunniPath and reward all involved and all who benefit from you with immense khair.

Was-salaam,

Muhammad Abdul-Haqq

As Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah
This is very exciting news to hear. I was wondering how I can go about lisitening to this Dars from overseas. I am in Yemen and the time for this dars is 5pm EST which for me is 12am. Will there be any other way to obtain this insha Allah?
Please let me know I am very interested in this paticular Dars of our beloved Nana. Jazzak Allah Khairan Katheer.
Aminah

wa ‘alaykum assalam,

Only current students will have access to the lesson. If you can’t attend live, insha’Allah the recording will also be posted on the same “Student Live Events” course page from where you will login to the live session.

Hope that’s clear.

As salaamu alaykum,

I am confident that many will be blessed by this introduction to a phenomenal shaykha and friend of Allah. May Allah be pleased with our beloved Nana Asma’u, her father Shaykh Uthman dan Fodio, and their blessed family! Ameen!

Salaam,

I tried following the steps for accessing the Live Event but I do not see a “Student Events” Link in step 2 to click on. I wanted my niece to view this and She could not also find the “Student Events” link.

wasalaam.

wa ‘alaykum assalam,

As long as you are a current student (i.e. enrolled in a Summer 2007 full-semester or short course), you will see the link appear on your My Courses list at least the day before the event.

Hope this is clear.

Salaams,

The event is scheduled for 9pm GMT ; which is 12am Jordan time, correct? It seems pretty late. How long will the event be for(duration) and inshaAllah it will be posted afterwards; how long after and how will we know?
Thank you in advance,

salaams
