The Origin of Misfortune

Posted by abdulkarim on June 15th, 2007

Bismillah

As-salamu alaykum wa rahamatullahi wa barakatuhu

Sayyidi al-Habib Umar Bin Hafiz (Allah preserve him) said to a group of us tonight: “Attachment to other than Allah is the origin of all types of misfortune and the cause of all calamities.” He told us to remember it. So the faqir (your needy brother) just wanted to convey it to our beloved brothers and sisters on the horizons. May Allah save of from states that bring more hardship to the Nation of our beloved Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace).

Asalamu ala`ykum warahmatulah wabarakatuh.

With regards the the specifc quote mentioned,I have a couple of questions.
If one`s heart were not attached to “other than Allah” is that a guarentee for not facing trails and calamities? Or is it that one`s “understanding” of these trials changes [i.e one looks at the bigger picture ] such that one is no longer upset by them?

Jazakum Allah khayr.

I had the oppurtunity of listening to a very good talk on this topic by a South African scholar, Sh. Sulaiman Moola. He mentioned something very beautiful(to the nearest meaning) “Having Allah(SWT) on your side does not mean sailing in a ship with no waves, instead it is to sail in such a ship which no storm can sink…”.

Perhaps that helps.

Allah Hafiz

SubhanAllah!

Jazakum Allah Khayr Sidi Omair for sharing this excellent quote.
