A Few Education-Related Posts on “Noise Between Signals”
Victor Lombardy recently blogged on a few education issues:
- Want to Be An Expert? Practice for Ten Years: “an intriguing finding dating to 1899, which shows that even the most talented individual requires a decade of committed practice before reaching world-class level.”
- Need Help Providing Internet Education to the Disadvantaged: An issue that is catching steam
- Ken Bain’s Research on College Teachers: Bain recently joined my Alma Mata (MSU!) from NYU. Among the many insights he provides (based on my Amazon cliffnoting :)):
- Students who are “at risk” in science courses actually do significantly better if they are invited into honors courses, rather than being put into remedial classes.
- The attitude of the professor is far more important than any other aspect of teaching
- Outstanding teachers have a style that goes beyond simple technique: They are extremely knowledgeable about their subject, manifest humility, respect for their students, faith in their students and trust in their students that they will make the effort required.

Interesting read.Perhaps what may be noteworthy about “What the Best College Teachers Do” was “Most of all, they believe two things fervently: that teaching matters and that students can learn”.
